Meralco forces deathmatch, blasts Phoenix, 90-74

PBA News 2018: Meralco Bolts forced a quarterfinals deathmatch, as it blasted the Phoenix Fuel Masters, 90-74 in the 2018 PBA Governors’ Cup this Wednesday at Cuneta Astrodome. Import Allen Durham paced the Bolts with his double-double of 26 buckets and 16 boards while Chris Newsome also finished with 16 markers.

Notes:

➤ Former San Beda star guard Baser Amer also added 14 points and drained two clutch threes for the Bolts in crunch time.

Meralco showed their offensive firepower as they shot better on all cylinders against Phoenix, firing 34 of 86 shots for a 39% field goal percentage against Phoenix’s 28 of 93 (30%). The Bolts also connected well from way beyond the arc by making 7 of 23 treys to the Fuel Masters’ 2 of 26 threes made.

➤ Reinforcement Eric Phelps led the losing Phoenix with his own double-double of 27 points and 15 caroms. Meanwhile, temperamental forward Calvin Abueva also chipped-in 18 markers for the Fuel Masters.

Phoenix and Meralco will resume hostilities once more this Friday, November 9 for a do-or-die rubber match and fight for the remaining Semis spot against the Alaska Aces.

Phoenix gains twice-to-beat, defeats Blackwater, 97-91

PBA News 2018: Phoenix Fuel Masters gained the twice-to-beat edge, by defeating the Blackwater Elite, 97-91 to barge into 2018 PBA Governors’s Cup quarterfinals this Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum. “The Beast” Calvin Abueva showed his mettle by dropping 25 big points and 8 boards for Phoenix while sniper Matthew Wright contributed 23 buckets and 7 caroms.

Notes:

➤ Reinforcement Eugene Phelps also added 16 markers and 6 dimes for the Fuel Masters.

➤ The Fuel Masters outrebounded the Elite, 64 against 50 boards total.

➤ Import Henry Walker led the losing Elite with 21 buckets and 12 rebounds while Nard Pinto registered 17 points and 10 dimes.

Blackwater lost the chance to gain the twice-to-beat advantage and will face a dangerous Magnolia squad in the quarterfinals.

➤ On the other hand, Phoenix ended the eliminations with an 8-3 slate and secured the 2nd place in the quarterfinals behind league leader Ginebra. They are bound to campaign in the playoffs against a yet to be determined 7th place team.

Ginebra slips past Phoenix, 101-99

PBA News 2018: Barangay Ginebra slipped past the Phoenix Fuel Masters, 101-99, in the 2018 PBA Governors’ Cup this Saturday at the Xavier University Gym in Cagayan de Oro City. Celebrated import Justin Brownlee helped the Gin Kings salvage the game late with his 34 points and 15 rebounds, while Joe Devance also added 15 markers and 4 boards.

Notes:

Scottie Thompson also posted stellar numbers for the Gin Kings with his 12 buckets and 14 caroms, while LA Tenorio chipped-in 10 points and 5 assists.

➤ It was a seesaw battle as there were several lead changes up until 8:19 in the 4th with Phoenix leading 87-85, but Ginebra broke out in clutch time to snatch the victory. Phoenix had a chance to win the game later with 10 ticks left and Barangay Ginebra leading with two, 101-99, but Matthew Wright lost the ball to Brownlee.

Wright led Phoenix with his 27 buckets and 4 rebounds, while Eugune Phelps was limited to 23 points and 13 boards. Calvin Abueva and Jason Perkins also registered vital numbers and scored 17 and 13 points apiece.

➤ The Gin Kings did not have injured stars Greg Slaughter, Japeth Aguilar, and Sol Mercado.

➤ Ginebra is now the league leader in the 2018 Governors’ Cup as they surged to 5-1 while bumping-off the Fuel Masters who dropped to a 5-2 win-loss slate.

PBA News 2018: Phoenix Fuel Masters cracked the Magnolia Hotshots, 95-82, in the ongoing in the 2018 PBA Governors’ Cup this Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum. Import Eugene Phelps led the Fuel Masters with his double-double 36 markers and 20 boards, while gunner Matthew Wright added 13 points.

Notes:

Phoenix imposed a towering defensive umbrella as they made 11 block shots compared to the Hotshots’ 2 swats. They also shot better from the field with 33 of 71 field goals made (46%), while Magnolia had 29 of 90 (32%) clip.

➤ Reinforcement Romeo Travis paced the losing Magnolia with 28 points and 19 rebounds, while Ian Sangalang, Jio Jalalon, and Mark Barroca all finished with identical 11 points.

➤ Phoenix is now 2nd in the Governors’ Cup standings at 5-1, while Magnolia suffered it’s lone loss and dropped to a 2-1 slate.

Alaska wins face-off with Abueva and Phoenix, 108-97

PBA News 2018: The Alaska Aces won its face-off with Calvin Abueva and the Phoenix Fuel Masters, 108-97 this Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum in the 2018 PBA Governor’s Cup. Import Mike Harris hauled 23 points, 11 boards and 3 swats, while guard Chris Banchero made 19 markers, 9 dimes and 4 caroms.

Notes:

Simon Enciso showed his mettle once more as he dropped 18 points and 4 assists for the Aces, while veteran Nonoy Baclao contributed 15 goals, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks. It was the best performance of Baclao as part of the Aces roster.

➤ It was a see-saw battle as Alaska overturned an 11-point deficit at the half, to lead by 12 points in the second.

➤ Eugune Phelps aided the losing Phoenix with his monstrous 27 points and 24 rebounds, while former Archer Jason Perkins chimed-in 20 buckets. 

 “The Beast” Abueva also made a good account of himself against his former team by contributing 18 points and 9 boards. Abueva was traded recently by the Aces for Karl Dehesa.

Alaska is now leading the pack in the Governors’ Cup race, as it now holds a 3-0 win-loss slate, while Phoenix buckled to its first loss for a 2-1 record.

Phelps monster game helps Phoenix overpower Columbian, 113-107

PBA News 2018: Eugene Phelps monster game helped Phoenix overpower Columbian, 113-107, in the eliminations of the 2018 PBA Governors’ Cup this Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum. Phelps hauled 50 points, 17 rebounds and 8 blocks, while newly-traded Calvin Abueva chipped-in 12 buckets, 13 boards and 3 swats.

Notes:

Phelps registered his third 50-point performance in his PBA career.

Phoenix also got stellar numbers from Jason Perkins who had 11 goals, 5 rebounds and 5 dimes, while high-flyer JC Intal made 11 points.

➤ Local Jerramy King starred for Columbian Dyip with his 27 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals, while Akeem Wright dropped 25 markers, 14 caroms and 6 dishes.

“The Beast” Abueva played his first game in the Governors’ Cup after being traded by Alaska to Phoenix during the Commissioner’s Cup. Calvin also swatted away a potential game winning trey by King in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter with score at 109-107.

Dyip is still winless in the Governors’ Cup, while Phoenix began its campaign on a good note at 1-0 slate.

Alaska trades Abueva to Phoenix for Dehesa

August 7, 2018 – Manila

PBA News 2018: The Alaska Aces has decided to sever ties with “The Beast” Calvin Abueva after six years and one championship title in the PBA. Abueva was traded to the Phoenix Petroleum Masters in exchange for fiery guard Karl Dehesa and a 2019 PBA first round draft pick.

Notes:

Abueva won one BPC – Best Player of the Conference award with the Aces and two First Mythical Team. He also bagged six All-Star Team stints with the Milkmen.

➤ Abueva was indefinitely suspended by Alaska due to frequent absence in practices and in one game. He was also not fielded during the Semifinal battle of the Aces against San Miguel where Calvin’s presence could have been a deciding factor.

➤ Calvin missed half of the elimination round and the entire playoffs run of the Aces in the Commissioner’s Cup.

➤The Milkmen drafted Abueva 2nd in the PBA Draft back in 2012 where Junemar Fajardo was the first draftee.

Alaska coach Alex Compton stated, “We would like to thank Calvin for his six years of service with Alaska and the good memories”.
