Ginebra wins 3rd straight, frustrates NorthPort 104-98

PBA News 2018: Barangay Ginebra won its’ 3rd straight, to frustrate the rejuvenated NorthPort Batang Pier, 104-98, in the 2018 PBA Governors’ Cup this Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum. Justin Brownlee once again led the spirited Gin Kings run with his 27 points, 8 dimes and 8 boards, while Japeth Aguilar added 23 buckets and 9 caroms.

Notes:

➤ Four Ginebra players finished in double digits as Brownlee and Aguilar, as well LA Tenorio and Greg Slaughter, led the points haul. Tenorio ended-up with 18 buckets and 5 steals, as well as Greg Slaughter who dropped 18 markers and 9 rebounds.

Batang Pier was gearing-up for an upset over Ginebra who wasted a 19-point lead in the third. NorthPort even narrowed the gap to within 3 points with almost a minute remaining in the ballgame. Averting disaster, Aguilar registered timely clutch conversions as he nailed 4 straight points to lead the Kings to victory.

➤ NorthPort was ably led by Stanley Pringle, who just returned from the Asian Games, with his monstrous 34 points and 7 assists. Import Rashaw Wood also added 28 buckets, 11 caroms and 6 dimes.

➤ Curiously, center Greg Slaughter tweaked his ankle and did not come back to finish the ballgame for Ginebra. Meanwhile, Sean Anthony returned to the Batang Pier fold after being sidelined by injury.

➤ Ginebra is now 3-0 in the Governors’ Cup, while Batang Pier is still win-less at 0-4.

PBA News 2018: Blackwater Elite cuffed the San Miguel Beermen, 103-100 this Wednesday in the 2018 PBA Governors’ Cup at the Araneta Coliseum. Import Henry Walker led the Elite’s stunning victory with his impressive 35 buckets, 17 boards and 7 steals, while local Mike Digregorio chipped-in 21 markers.

Notes:

Nard Pinto also made 15 points and 9 caroms, while Poy Erram added a respectable 10 goals and 9 rebounds haul for the Elite.

➤ The losing Beermen got consolation from reinforcement AZ Reid who dropped 26 markers and 12 boards, while bullish Fil-German Christian Standhardinger contributed 20 points.

➤ San Miguel did not have reigning MVP Junemar Fajardo who is nursing a shin injury. Blackwater meanwhile, had Erram making his return to the PBA after playing for the national team in the Asian Games.

➤ SMB fell down to a 1-1 win-loss record, while Blackwater improved to 2-1 in the PBA Governors’ Cup.

NCAA News 2018: Reigning MVP CJ Perez lifted the LPU Pirates over the San Sebastian Stags, 88-70 this Tuesday in the second round of the 2018 NCAA Season 94 at the FilOil Flying V Centre. Perez starred for Lyceum with his 21 markers, 9 boards and 5 steals, while Jaycee Marcelino added a double-double of 17 buckets and 11 rebounds.

Notes:

➤ Twin Jaycee Marcelino also contributed 14 points and 6 dimes for the Pirates.

➤ Stags forward Michael Calisaan backstopped the losing San Sebastian with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while RK Ilagan made 13 points.

➤ The Lyceum of the Philippines University now leads the Season 94 pack with an unblemished 10-0 slate, while the Stags are languishing at the bottom with a 1-9 record.

PBA 2018: Justin Brownlee carried the mighty Barangay Ginebra over the Alaska Aces, 109-101 in the 2018 PBA Governors’ Cup this Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum. Brownlee toyed with his near triple-double of 45 buckets, 11 boards and 9 dimes, while high-flyer Japeth Aguilar made 24 points and 10 caroms.

Notes:

Kevin Ferrer and Greg Slaughter also contributed 11 and 9 points apiece for the Gin Kings.

➤ The losing Alaska got stellar numbers from Vic Manuel who crunched 28 points and 4 rebounds, while Mike Harris added 23 markers and 19 rebounds. Harris did not return for the fourth quarter due to probable injury.

➤ Aces guard Chris Banchero meanwhile continued his stellar form as he dropped 21 points, 10 assists and 5 boards for Alaska who lost their first game of the conference.

➤ Ginebra is vying for their third straight PBA Governors’ Cup trophy.

➤ Ginebra is now at 2-0 win-loss slate, while Alaska is at 3-1.

PBA 2018: Talk ‘N Text KaTropa arrested a three game losing skid, and socked Columbian Dyip, 118-114 in the 2018 PBA Governors’ Cup this Sunday evening at the Araneta Coliseum. “The Blur” Jayson Castro starred for the resurgent Talk ‘N Text with his 25 points and 7 assists, while “The Bro” Terrence Romeo contributed 22 buckets and 6 dishes.

Notes:

TNT played minus coach Nash Racela who was replaced by Eric Gonzales as he was on leave.

➤ Romeo could have won the game in the waning seconds of the fourth, but missed the clutch lay-up against the defense of Akeem Wright. Regulation ended at 107 all.

➤ Terrence and Dyip guard Rashawn McCarthy almost figured into a feisty fight in the overtime period. McCarthy confronted Romeo who retaliated with a headbutt. Romeo was called for a technical foul and later engaged in a shouting exchange with McCarthy. Cooler heads eventually prevailed as both later shook hands.

➤ KaTropa is now at 2-4 slate registering only its second win after losing the last three with import Stacy Davis. TNT is now on the hunt for a new import as Davis proved slow to adapting to TNT’s system.

➤ Meanwhile, Jerramy King backstopped the losing Dyip with his 26 markers and 9 caroms, while import Wright made 24 buckets, 9 rebounds and 9 dimes.

➤ Dyip is still winless in the Governors’ Cup and is sporting a regrettable 20 PBA game losing streak.

Asian Games News 2018: ROS Pilipinas flattened Syria, 109-55 and copped 5th place in the 2018 Asian Games basketball this Friday at the GBK Hall in Jakarta. Cleveland Cavaliers’ Jordan Clarkson stamped his class by chalking-up 29 points, 6 dimes and 4 boards, while Fil-German Christian Standhardinger chimed-in 27 buckets.

Notes:

➤ The Philippines led by as much as 26 points at the half, 60-34.

James Yap suited-up once more and ended-up with 9 markers. Yap did not play in the battle against Japan and South Korea due to an apparent ankle injury.

Clarkson is set to go back to the NBA to begin training for the upcoming season with the post-Lebron era Cavaliers.

ROS Pilipinas failed to get to the medal rounds after the heart-breaking loss to nemesis South Korea in the Asiad quarterfinals.

➤ The fifth place finish of the Philippine basketball team is an upgrade from 2014 (Incheon) when they placed 7th. RP Five fared better at 4th place in 2002 (Busan) and last bagged a bronze medal courtesy of the PBA Centennial team in 1998 (Bangkok).
