Jones Cup News 2018: Iran NT subdued the Ateneo Blue Eagles, 70-63, and effectively ended the Blue Eagles heroic run in the 40th William Jones Cup 2018 this Sunday at the Xinzhuang Gymnasium in Taipei. Iranian three-point bomber Vahid Dalirzahan led the middle eastern juggernaut with 26 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists on 3-of-3 rainbow shooting, while Rasoul Mozafarivanani also chipped-in 16 buckets and 8 dishes for Iran.

Notes:

➤ ADMU stopped-short of making the Jones Cup podium as it dropped to a respectable 4th place finish.

➤ Matt Nieto led the eliminated Ateneo with 14 points and 3 assists, while Thirdy Ravena also dropped 12 markers and 3 caroms.

➤ Meanwhile, reinforcement Angelo Kouame contributed 11 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks for Ateneo.

➤Ateneo wrapped-up its Jones Cup campaign with a win-loss slate of 5-3.

Brownlee’s 44 lifts Ginebra over ROS, 75-72

PBA News 2018: Justin Brownlee‘s 44 points lifted Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings over Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 75-72, to lead 2-1 in their Semifinals face-off in the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup this Saturday at the MOA Arena. Brownlee posted incredible numbers as he also crunched 15 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals, while “El Tinyente” LA Tenorio also contributed 13 markers, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

Notes:

Reggie Johnson paced the losing Elasto Painters with 13 buckets and 22 boards, while beanpole Raymund Almazan added 12 points and 9 caroms.

Ginebra led by as much as 25 points beginning in the second quarter 43-18, courtesy of Brownlee’s 25 first half points.

➤ Game 4 will be Monday, July 23 at the Araneta Coliseum.

FIBA issues suspensions on Philippines and Australia

July 19, 2018 – 3PM Manila Time

Pilipinas Basketball 2018 News: FIBA officially issued punishments and suspensions to the Philippines and Australia  basketball organizations, officials, coaches, players and participating referees this Thursday 3 PM Manila time July 19. No lifetime bans were meted out but mostly five game suspensions and monetary penalties were handed out.

Notes:

➤ 3 players from Australia and 10 from Gilas Pilipinas were punished.

➤ Australian players included Aaron Kickert (5 games suspended), Thon Maker (3 games suspended) and Chris Goulding (1 game suspended)

➤ Gilas players included Calvin Abueva (6 games suspended, including one past offense), Roger Pogoy (5 games suspended),  Carl Bryan Cruz (5 games suspended), Jio Jalalon (5 games suspended), Terrence Romeo ( 3 games suspended), Jayson Castro William (3 games suspended), Andray Blatche (3 games suspended), Troy Rosario (3 games suspended), Japeth Aguilar (1 game suspended) and Matthew Wright (1 game suspended),

➤ Both Basketball organizations from Australia and Philippines were given sanctions. Basketball Australia was fined with $134,887.20, while SBP or Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas was fined $337,208.19 dollars.

➤ Coaches from the Philippines were also disciplined. Coach Jong Uichico was suspended 3 games for participation in the brawl, while Coach Chot Reyes was suspended one game and fined $13,521.88 dollars for inciting unsportsmanlike behavior. Reyes later denied the accusation of inciting (in a Twitter post), but accepts the punishment nonetheless.

➤ Participating referees were also axed as they failed to control the situation during the Australia – Philippines qualifiers match last July 2 at Philippine Arena in Bulacan. The referees from Korea, China and Malaysia were suspended one year from officiating FIBA international tournaments.

➤ The Philippines basketball will also be under three years probation. All three home games of Pilipinas Basketball will be strictly played privately outside of the viewing public.

➤ All suspensions only applies to international games. Games played in the NBA, Australian NBL or the Philippine’s PBA will not be affected.

➤ No suspensions or punishments were mentioned regarding acts committed by Aussie players including racial slurs.

Jones Cup 2018 News: Ateneo Blue Eagles shackled Japan, 80-76, to stay in contention in the 40th William Jones Cup 2018 this Wednesday at the Xinzhuang Gymnasium in Taipei. Angelo Kouame made-up for his lackluster showing against Canada the other day to lead Ateneo with doubel-double 15 points and 15 rebounds. Thirdy Ravena also made his presence felt with 14 buckets and 9 boards.

Notes:

The Blue Eagles evened their win-loss slate to 2-2.

Takuma Sato paced Japan with 12 buckets, while Koyo Takahashi added 11 points.

➤ Adrian Wong had an altercation with Sato in the final frame, with the latter getting whistled for a flagrant foul after hitting Wong on the head.

➤ ADMU will next battle Indonesia this Thursday at 1PM.

Jones Cup 2018 News: Canada escaped a resurgent Ateneo Blue Eagles 86-78, in the continuation of the 40th William Jones Cup 2018 this Tuesday at the Xinzhuang Gymnasium in Taipei. Shaquille Keith paced 3D Sports Global Sports Canada with his 18 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Ateneo gave the Canadians a scare as they nearly upended 3D Sports by getting to within 6 points deficit with 59 ticks left in the ballgame.

Notes:

➤ ADMU is now down to a 1-2 slate after the loss to Canada. Global Sports meanwhile raced to 3-0 in the win-loss column.

➤ Matt Nieto lifted the losing Blue Eagles with 18 markers, while Thirdy Ravena added 12 buckets and 6 caroms.

Reinforcement Angelo Kouame failed to register stellar numbers as he dropped a forgettable 4 points the entire game for ADMU.

➤ Ateneo will next face Japan this Wednesday in the continuation of 40th William Jones Cup.

PBA D-League News 2018: Go for Gold Scratchers mastered the CEU Scorpions, 75-60, in the ongoing 2018 PBA D-League Foundation Cup this Monday at the Ynares Arena. Rey Publico paced the Scratchers with his 18 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists while Paul Desiderio contributed 17 markers.

Jones Cup 2018 News: South Korea slashed Ateneo, 90-73, and derailed the UAAP champions with a lone loss in the 40th William Jones Cup 2018 this Monday at the Xinzhuang Gymnasium in Taipei. Ricardo Ratcliffe and Heo Ilyoung led the Koreans with 15 points apiece.

Notes:

Ateneo wounded-up with 1-1 record in Taipei.

Thirdy Ravena led the losing Pinoys with 14 buckets, 5 steals, 4 assists and 4 boards, while Matt Nieto managed with 12 markers. Reinforcement Angelo Kouame also dropped 10 points and 16 caroms for the Philippine representatives to the Jones Cup.

Ratcliffe sat-out the entire second half even after scoring 15 points for Korea at the half.
Korea bullied the Filipinos from the rainbow stripe with 10 of 18 three-point bombs made, while ADMU missed 22 of 27 treys.

➤ The Blue Eagles will next face the national team of Canada on Tuesday.

PBA News 2018: San Miguel Beermen ripped the Alaska Aces, 105-94, to lead 2-0 in their Semifinals series in the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup this Monday at the Araneta Coliseum. Import Renaldo Balkman led the Beermen once again with his 31 points, while “The Kraken” Junemar Fajardo also lifted SMB with 21 markers, 18 boards and 2 steals.

➤ Diamon Simpson led the listless Aces with his 19 buckets, 15 caroms and 6 blocks, while Simon Enciso added 19 points as well. Vic Manuel once again fizzled and was relegated to only 15 points total.

Justin Brownlee once again backstopped Barangay Ginebra with incredible 35 big points, 14 rebounds, 9 assists and 4 blocks. Negros Sniper Jeff Chan also proved his mettle with his 21 markers and 4 boards.

➤ Ginebra is now riding an eight-game winning streak. They lead the Semifinals series opposite ROS with a 1-0 win-loss slate.

Import Reggie Johnson powered the losing Painters with 30 buckets and 13 caroms, while James Yap added 15 markers and 8 rebounds.

Japeth Aguilar did not play due to Achilles tendon injury. Greg Slaughter made-up for big man duties as he defended against Johnson and also scored 20 points and hauled 6 rebounds.

Jones Cup 2018: Ateneo Blue Eagles routed Chinese Taipei White, 87-64, in the 40th William Jones Cup Basketball 2018 this Sunday at the Xinzhuang Gymnasium in Taipei. Representing the national team, Ateneo pounced on Taipei early and never looked back. Eagles main cog Thirdy Ravena led ADMU with his 17 markers, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Reinforcement Angelo Kouame meanwhile contributed 15 markers and 18 boards.

Notes:

The Filipino-Taiwanese court face-off was the Jones Cup debut game for both squads, with the Pinoys getting the first blood.

➤ Oscar Kao lifted the losing Taiwan-White with 16 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals while Lin Chun-Chi added 15 buckets and 5 caroms.
