Philippine Basketball:

Gilas Pilipinas chooses Stanhardinger over injured Slaughter

September 12, 2018 – Manila Time

Philippine Basketball News 2018: Gilas Pilipinas will battle Iran NT in the fourth window of the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers tomorrow Thursday (September 13) sans injured Greg Slaughter and Stanley Pringle. Coach Yeng Guiao chose to field-in Christian Stanhardinger as the naturalized player to have a better match-up against Iran led by behemoth Hamed Haddadi at center position.

Notes:

Slaughter had the greenlight of FIBA to play as local, but his ankle injury sustained from his last game with Barangay Ginebra in the PBA, sidelined him from practicing with the Gilas’ crew. It was questionable if he could play at 100% against Haddadi given his injury.

Pringle would have also been a shoo-in in the line-up but being restricted as a naturalized player meant that it was either him or Stanhardinger who will be chosen for the post.

➤ Also cut from the line-up were Japeth Aguilar and Matthew Wright, who are both serving a one-game FIBA suspension.

➤ The final line-up includes Stanhardinger, Poy Erram, Asi Taulava, Beau Belga, Raymond Almazan, Ian Sangalang, Allein Maliksi, Alex Cabagnot, Scottie Thompson, Paul Lee, Gabe Norwood and Marcio Lassiter.

➤ SBP president Al Panlilio announced the final roster this Wednesday morning.

➤ After the game against Iran, Gilas will then face Qatar on September 17 in a closed-door matchup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Philippine Basketball:

Chot Reyes yields post to Yeng Guiao

September 11, 2018 – Manila Time

Philippine Basketball News 2018: Coach Chot Reyes has stepped aside from the Gilas Pilpinas program and yielded the national mentor post to Yeng Guiao.

Notes:

➤ Chot stated via his Instagram account, “I came out of retirement to coach Gilas because MVP (Manny V. Pangilinan) asked me back in October 2016. Amid my growing responsibilities in [TV5] and other big projects, I accepted, because I have complete trust in MVP’s judgment and more importantly because it was an opportunity to serve the country,”

➤ He added, “We have long worked for full support from all of Philippine basketball’s major stakeholders – from Coach Rajko Toroman’s time to my stint in 2013 to 2014, then Coach Tab Baldwin, until my current tenure. Now that the PBA has opened its doors fully to the SBP and the national team, it is time for me to step aside and contribute in a different capacity, focusing on the 2023 program.”

Reyes steered the Philippine basketball team in the following years and events:

YearBasketball EventRecord
2005FIBA Asia Champions Cup5th
2005William Jones Cup3rd
2005Brunei Sultan Cup1st
2007William Jones Cup3rd
2012William Jones Cup1st
2013FIBA Asia Championship2nd
2014FIBA Asia Cup3rd
2014FIBA World Cup21st
2014Asian Games7th
2017SEABA Cup1st
2017FIBA Asia Cup4th
2018FIBA World Asian Qualifiers4-2

➤ Reyes was recently suspended as coach of Gilas Pilipinas following the regrettable brawl between the Philippines and Australia. 10 Filipinos and 3 Aussies players were suspended as punishment by the FIBA governing body. Additionally, Reyes got suspended for one game, for supposedly inciting violence on court.

➤ Guiao was then named as temporary replacement coach pending Reyes’ ban. Consequently, Yeng’s coaching performance during the 2018 Asian Games increased the public clamor for him to permanently hold the national coach post. Guiao barely had a week of preparation, but led the ROS-Pilipinas team to a respectable 5th place finish.

➤ Yeng is now in the thick of preparing the Team Pilipinas basketball team as they battle a dangerous Iran national team tomorrow Thursday (September 13), for the continuation of the FIBA World Asian qualifiers.

➤ “Together with all the players and coaches who have sacrificed and put their careers on the line for flag and country, we wish coach Yeng and the current team great success, as they continue the World Cup journey. We are with you. Once Gilas, always Gilas,” Reyes reiterated.

➤ Chot’s stint as coach of the national team produced the best performance of the Philippine basketball team in three decades or so in the FIBA Asia Championships, FIBA Asia Cup, Jones Cup and the FIBA Worlds. The lone exception was the regrettable 7th place finish in the 2014 Asian Games.

Philippine Basketball:

FIBA greenlights Slaughter

September 8, 2018 – Manila

Philippine Basketball News 2018: FIBA has officially recognized the eligibility of Filipino Greg Slaughter to play as a natural player for the Philippine basketball team. This development also allows Slaughter to play for the national team in the upcoming 2019 FIBA World Cup fourth qualifying window without restrictions against Iran and Qatar.

Notes:

➤ FIBA accepted the eligibility of the 7-foot Barangay Ginebra center despite presenting a Philippine passport shortly after the age of 16. The restriction is limited to the acquisition of passport before the age of 16 (article 3-21.a), showing FIBA’s leniency and consideration for the Fil-American.

➤ “We have taken note of the fact that the player is claiming to have acquired the legal nationality of Philippines before the age of 16 but has failed to present the respective passport with a date of issue before his sixteenth birthday,” FIBA stated through secretary general Patrick Baumann.

➤ Contributing factors to the decision of FIBA included the fact that Slaughter has resided in the Philippines since 2007 at age 19 and that he had studied locally while playing hoops for the last 11 years.

➤ SBP President Al Panlilio stated “We are happy to announce to the entire basketball loving Filipinos that SBP’s push to FIBA to prove that Greg Slaughter is a pure Filipino has been recognized.”

➤ “The SBP is elated with this development in our desire to come up with the best basketball roster for our flag and country,” he also added.

➤ Coach Yeng Guiao will now only be limited to choose between star guard Stanley Pringle and bullish forward Christian Standhardinger for a slot to play as a naturalized player in the upcoming qualifiers.

➤ Pilipinas Basketball will be pitted against Iran for the FIBA Qualifiers on Thursday September 13.

Ginebra wins 3rd straight, frustrates NorthPort 104-98

September 5, 2018 – Araneta Coliseum

PBA News 2018: Barangay Ginebra won its’ 3rd straight, to frustrate the rejuvenated NorthPort Batang Pier, 104-98, in the 2018 PBA Governors’ Cup this Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum. Justin Brownlee once again led the spirited Gin Kings run with his 27 points, 8 dimes and 8 boards, while Japeth Aguilar added 23 buckets and 9 caroms.

Notes:

➤ Four Ginebra players finished in double digits as Brownlee and Aguilar, as well LA Tenorio and Greg Slaughter, led the points haul. Tenorio ended-up with 18 buckets and 5 steals, as well as Greg Slaughter who dropped 18 markers and 9 rebounds.

Batang Pier was gearing-up for an upset over Ginebra who wasted a 19-point lead in the third. NorthPort even narrowed the gap to within 3 points with almost a minute remaining in the ballgame. Averting disaster, Aguilar registered timely clutch conversions as he nailed 4 straight points to lead the Kings to victory.

➤ NorthPort was ably led by Stanley Pringle, who just returned from the Asian Games, with his monstrous 34 points and 7 assists. Import Rashaw Wood also added 28 buckets, 11 caroms and 6 dimes.

➤ Curiously, center Greg Slaughter tweaked his ankle and did not come back to finish the ballgame for Ginebra. Meanwhile, Sean Anthony returned to the Batang Pier fold after being sidelined by injury.

➤ Ginebra is now 3-0 in the Governors’ Cup, while Batang Pier is still win-less at 0-4.

TNT arrests skid, socks Columbian, 118-114

September 2, 2018 – Araneta Coliseum

PBA 2018: Talk ‘N Text KaTropa arrested a three game losing skid, and socked Columbian Dyip, 118-114 in the 2018 PBA Governors’ Cup this Sunday evening at the Araneta Coliseum. “The Blur” Jayson Castro starred for the resurgent Talk ‘N Text with his 25 points and 7 assists, while “The Bro” Terrence Romeo contributed 22 buckets and 6 dishes.

Notes:

TNT played minus coach Nash Racela who was replaced by Eric Gonzales as he was on leave.

➤ Romeo could have won the game in the waning seconds of the fourth, but missed the clutch lay-up against the defense of Akeem Wright. Regulation ended at 107 all.

➤ Terrence and Dyip guard Rashawn McCarthy almost figured into a feisty fight in the overtime period. McCarthy confronted Romeo who retaliated with a headbutt. Romeo was called for a technical foul and later engaged in a shouting exchange with McCarthy. Cooler heads eventually prevailed as both later shook hands.

➤ KaTropa is now at 2-4 slate registering only its second win after losing the last three with import Stacy Davis. TNT is now on the hunt for a new import as Davis proved slow to adapting to TNT’s system.

➤ Meanwhile, Jerramy King backstopped the losing Dyip with his 26 markers and 9 caroms, while import Wright made 24 buckets, 9 rebounds and 9 dimes.

➤ Dyip is still winless in the Governors’ Cup and is sporting a regrettable 20 PBA game losing streak.

Notes:

➤ Reinforcement Akeem Wright backstopped the defeated Dyip with his 37 buckets, 17 caroms and 5 dimes, while Jerramy King contributed 22 markers and 7 boards for the Columbian.

Fuller came in as NLEX replacement for prolific import Olu Ashaolu who had been playing injured for the past three games.

➤ It was a see-saw battle as Alaska overturned an 11-point deficit at the half, to lead by 12 points in the second.

➤ Eugune Phelps aided the losing Phoenix with his monstrous 27 points and 24 rebounds, while former Archer Jason Perkins chimed-in 20 buckets.

“The Beast” Abueva also made a good account of himself against his former team by contributing 18 points and 9 boards. Abueva was traded recently by the Aces for Karl Dehesa.

Alaska is now leading the pack in the Governors’ Cup race, as it now holds a 3-0 win-loss slate, while Phoenix buckled to its first loss for a 2-1 record.
