PBA D-League News 2018: Batangas-EAC Generals squeaked past Go for Gold-CSB Scratchers, 87-85, in the PBA Developmental League Foundation’s Cup 2018 this Thursday at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig. Cyrus Tabi made the clutch layup with a second left to lift EAC over the Scratchers. Michael Mabulac led all scorers for the Generals with double-double 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Notes:

Tata Bautista also contributed 16 markers and 7 boards for EAC, while game-winner Tabi added 13 buckets with 8 coming in the payoff period.

Kris Porter top-scored for the losing Go for Gold- College of St. Benilde with 22 points and 6 rebounds. He also shot 50% from the rainbow country.

➤ Batangas-EAC now sports a 3-3 win-loss slate, while Go for Gold stands at 4-2.

PBA News 2018: San Miguel Beermen halted the BlackWater Elite, 115-106, to barge into the quarterfinals of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup 2018 this Wednesday at MOA Arena in Pasay. Veteran Arwind Santos carried the Beermen to its third straight victory with 23 big buckets and 15 rebounds . Marcio Lassiter also contributed 18 points while journeyman Kelly Nabong added 13 markers.

SMB now sports a 6-4 win-loss slate and ranks 5th in the quarterfinals standings.

➤ Prized Puerto Rican import Renaldo Balkman was limited to only 12 points the entire ballgame.

➤ Four-time MVP June Mar Fajardo had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Henry Walker provided 26 points and 12 caroms for the losing Elite, while Mike DiGregorio chipped-in 19 points.

➤ San Miguel’s bench outscored Blackwater 56-27.

➤ The Elite notched its 10th loss in 11 games in the Commissioner’s Cup and dropped to last in standings (12th).

PBA News 2018: Magnolia Pambansang Manok Hotshots cracked the NLEX Road Warriors, 116-89, to share 6th place in the quarterfinals of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup 2018 this Wednesday at MOA Arena in Pasay. Import Wayne Chism lifted the Hotshots with his 27 monstrous points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks, while “Angas ng Tondo” Paul Lee posted 21 markers.

  • Magnolia Hotshots now has the same 5-5 win-loss slate with Barangay Ginebra Kings and Globalport Batang Pier and 6th place in the quarterfinal round.

MPBL News 2018: Pampanga Lanterns escaped Bacoor Strikers, 81-80, in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Datu Cup 2018 this Tuesday at the Olivarez College Gym in Parañaque. Juneric Baloria topscored for the Lanterns with 24 points including the game-dagger freethrows in crunch time.

➤ Both the Lanterns and the Strikers now have identical 1-1 records.

➤ The Bacoor Strikers were led by Gab Banal and Chris Sumalinog who scored 21 and 17 buckets respectively.

Rumble at the Arena – Australia romps over Gilas, 89-53

FIBA Asian Qualifiers 2018 News: Australia romped over Gilas Pilipinas, 89-53, but the highlight of the World Cup 2019 qualifier this Monday at the Bulacan Philippine Arena was the all-out bench-clearing brawl between the Aussies and Filipinos. Roger Pogoy was at the center of the melee after an offensive play altercation with Christopher James Goulding. Consequently, Daniel Kickert retaliated with a sucker elbow and decked Pogoy that resulted to the chaotic court rumble. 

Notes:
James Goulding carried the Boomers with 23 points on 4 of 5 Three Point shooting (80% clip).

Andray Blatche led the losing Gilas with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

➤ The Filipinos later lost the game by default as it lost the majority of players due to ejection, and later the remaining players being disqualified due to fouls.

➤ The game was halted by the brawl in the third quarter with 04:01 remaining and Australia ahead big, 79-48. In all, nine Filipino players and four Aussies were ejected from the game. It was later continued with Pilipinas Basketball team being limited to only three players: June Mar Fajardo, Baser Amer, and Gabe Norwood.

Fajardo was saddled with early foul trouble and was limited to only 10 points.

➤ It was revealed by Coach Chot Reyes that Daniel Kickert was taunting and physically hitting Filipino players even during the shootaround warm-up period.

➤ Australia is now up with a 5-1 win-loss slate in the first round of the Qualifiers to top Group B while the Philippine basketball team settles for second with a 4-2 record. Both teams automatically advance to the second round together with third placer Japan beginning this September.

Reinforcement and Filoil MVP Angelo Kouame starred for the Blue Eagles with 15 points, 16 rebounds and 3 blocks.

  • Javee Mocon led the defeated Red Lions with 14 buckets and 12 caroms, while Donald Tankoua made 13 markers and 5 boards.
  • San Beda was the reigning 2017 Filoil Preseason champion.
  • Ateneo ace Thirdy Ravena made only 7 points the entire game.
  • The eliminations sweep and subsequent championship victory of Ateneo follows the pattern that San Beda laid during 2017 and De La Salle in 2016.
  • San Beda star player Robert Bolick was limited to only 10 points and did not return in the second half due to an apparent ankle injury.

Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup News: Ateneo Blue Eagles pounded the FEU Tamaraws, 50-38, to barge into the Finals of the Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup this Friday in San Juan. Spitfire Thirdy Ravena led the Tamaraws with miniscule 7 points in a defense oriented and low-scoring ballgame. The Blue Eagles will next face for the championship the victor between San Beda and St. Benilde in a do-or-die match later in the day.
